Panagia Eikosifonissa is a very impressive monastery built on the Pangai mountain, located 39 km from Kavala, 60 km from Serres and 33 km from Drama where it belongs ecclesiastical. It is built 753 meters above sea level and according to tradition it was founded by bishop Sozonas in 450 AD. in the nearby area of Vigla. Based on official records, this construction was abandoned and the monastery was moved to its current location by Osio Gernano during the 8th century.
The monastery has great national and religious significance, as it is largely associated with the efforts of the local Greek population to gain freedom and independence throughout history. More specifically, it played an active role in the War of Independence against the Turks, as well as in the Balkans and the two World Wars.
In the monastery the visitor can see many rare paintings of saints, relics and manuscripts kept and displayed in its large library. It has 150 rooms and today about 23 nuns live in the monastery. For this reason, when it comes to visitors, only women are allowed to stay for a few days or just overnight if they wish. In general, it is a landmark of the Orthodox religion for the region, while many visitors visit the monastery from Greece and abroad.
