Alistratis Cave
Slowly carved out of limestone by the Aggitis River, this cave has underground formations that will amaze you. It is one kilometer long.
The cave of Alistrati is located 6 kilometers away from the village of Alistrati and more specifically in the “Petroto” area which is a total of 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Serres. It attracts many visitors not only from Greece but also from abroad, as it is considered one of the largest and most beautiful caves in Europe. Alistratis cave became known in 1975 and today, out of its total length of 3 kilometers, 1 kilometer can be visited.
The surface of the cave is 25,000 square meters (6.17 acres). And the length of 3000 meters (9842 feet), while its age is estimated around 2 million years. The temperature inside the cave during May was found after measurements to be almost constant at 20 degrees Celsius, and the humidity 70-75%, while it has natural ventilation. The cave has a rich decoration, with a wide variety of stalagmites, stalactites and eccentrics.
At a short distance from the cave, the visitor can find the Aggitis gorge. In addition to the beauties of the river, everyone can admire the flora and fauna that are among the rarest that can be encountered since it includes many endemic species and some endangered ones.
