It is the largest river cave in the world with a length exceeding 15 kilometers of which only 500 meters can be visited. It is located 25 kilometers away from the city of Drama and more specifically, next to the village of Piges in the municipality of Prosotsani. The other name of the cave is Maaras, which may come from Arabic, meaning small cave, or from Hebrew, meaning water from the mountain.
Its uniqueness lies in the fact that the Aggitis river flows through the cave. It has been open to the public since 2001 and the visitor has the opportunity to admire the countless stalactites and stalagmites (mineral rock patterns that cover the entire interior.
It was discovered by French speleologists in 1978 in collaboration with the Hellenic Speleological Society. Many archaeological artefacts and prehistoric finds were discovered during excavations such as the mammoth truck kept in the Archaeological Museum of Drama.
One of the most impressive spots is where the river exits the cave through an arched opening and forms the base of an arched hall. This hall is 40 meters in diameter and 15 meters high.
In addition to the cave, the visitor can relax in cafes and restaurants, but a picnic by the river is also possible for everyone who is well equipped and wants to spend some time in the area.
